Psalms One Hundred Twenty- One

This Psalmist, perhaps was a pilgrim to Jerusalem.  He saw the mighty fortress of Zion, and heard his companions express confidence in its mighty defenses.  But he trusted in God as the source of his help rather than in man - made citadels and nature's rocky mountains.

A Psalm of David - A Song of degrees

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.  (KJV)

Psalm Ninety One | He that Dwells in God's Secret Place

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.  Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

God Speaks:

Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.  (KJV)

Psalms Forty-Four | Psalms for the Soul

To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, Maschil

We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work you didst in their days, in the times of old. How you didst drive out the heathen with your hand, and planted them; how you didst afflict the people, and cast them out.

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them: but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favor unto them.
Psalms Forty-Four | Psalms for the Soul

Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Jacob.  Through thee will we push down our enemies: through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us.

For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me.  But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us.  In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah.  But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and go not forth with our armies.

You make us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves.
Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scattered us among the heathen.
Thou sell thy people for nought, and dost not increase thy wealth by their price.

Thou make us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us.
Thou make us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people.  My confusion is continually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me,
Psalms Forty-Four | Psalms for the Soul - Hear the Word of the Lord

For the voice of him that reproach and blaspheme; by reason of the enemy and avenger.  All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.

Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way; Though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.  If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; Shall not God search this out? for he know the secrets of the heart.

Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, why sleep thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.  Wherefore hide thou thy face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?  For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleave unto the earth.  Arise for our help, and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.
 (KJV)
