Psalm forty-Two- Longing for God

The palmist, perhaps a Levite, longs for the day when he can again come to the Temple of God.  He seems to be far away from Jerusalem, and in his memory relives the joyous pilgrimages he used to make in the past.

To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.  (KJV)

Psalms Twenty-Two | Psalms for the Soul

To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar
 A Psalm of David

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the
words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you hear not; and in the night season, and am not silent.  But thou art holy, O You that inhabit the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in you: they trusted, and you did deliver them.

They cried unto you, and were delivered: they trusted in you, and were not confounded.  But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.  All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,  He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

But you are he that took me out of the womb: you did make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.  I was cast upon you from the womb: you are my God from my mother's belly.  Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.  They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleave to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.  I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.  They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.  Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.  My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.  All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before you.

For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.  A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

 (KJV)

Psalms - Twenty- One | Psalms for the Soul

In this Psalm, David sings of a King
 that is greater than he.
The king shall joy in your strength,

The king shall joy in your strength, O LORD; and in your salvation how greatly shall he rejoice!
You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah.
For you prevent him with the blessings of goodness: you set a crown of pure gold on his head.

He asked life of you, and you gave it him, even length of days for ever and ever. His glory is great in your salvation: honor and majesty have you laid upon him. For you have made him most blessed for ever: You have made him exceeding glad with your countenance.

For the king trust in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.
Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: your right hand shall find out those that hate you.

You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of your  anger: the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

Their fruit shall you destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.
For they intended evil against you: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.

Therefore shall you make them turn their back, when you shall make ready your arrows upon your strings against the face of them.  Be you exalted, LORD, in your own strength: so will we sing and praise your power.
 (KJV)

Psalms - Twenty | Psalms for the Soul

The LORD hear you in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend you

Send you help from the sanctuary, and strengthen you out of Zion  Remember all your offerings, and accept your burnt sacrifice; Selah.  Grant you according to your own heart, and fulfill all your counsel.

We will rejoice in your salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfill all your petitions.

Now know I that the LORD saves his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand.

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.

They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.  Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.

 (KJV)

Psalms Seventeen - Psalms for the Soul

Hear the right, O LORD, attend to my cry  give ear to my prayer, that go not out
of feigned lips.   Let my sentence come forth from your presence; let your eyes behold the things that are equal.

You have proved mine heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tried me, and shall find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.  Concerning the works of men, by the word of your lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

Hold up my goings in your paths, that my footsteps slip not. I have called upon you, for you will hear me, O God: incline your ear to me, and hear my speech.

Show your marvellous lovingkindness, O you that save by your right hand them which put their trust in you from those that rise up against them.

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of your wings, From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.  They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth

Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.
Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is your sword

From men which are your hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly you fill with your hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

Psalms Sixteen- God Preserves | Psalms for the Soul

Michtam of David.
A Poem

Preserve me, O God: for in you do I put my trust.  O my soul, you have said to the LORD, You are my Lord: my goodness extend not to you  But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.  The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: you maintain my lot.

The lines are fallen to me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.  I will bless the LORD, who has given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.  I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoice my flesh also shall rest in hope.  For you will not leave my soul in hell; neither will you suffer (allow) your Holy One to see corruption.

Psalms 16:11
You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

 (KJV)

Psalms Twelve | Psalms for the Soul -

It is supposed that David penned this psalm in Saul's reign, when there was a general decay of honesty and piety both in court and country, which he here complains of to God, and very feelingly, for he himself suffered by the treachery of his false friends and the insolence of his sworn enemies.

Psalms for the Soul-Psalm of David Help, LORD; for the godly man cease; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speak proud things:

Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puff at him.

The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

You shall keep them, O LORD, you shall preserve them from this generation for ever.

The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.
 (KJV)

Psalms Six - Psalms for the Soul

O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed but you, O LORD, how long?

Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for your mercies' sake. For in death there is no remembrance of you: in the grave who shall give you thanks?

I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it wax old because of all mine enemies.

Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity; for the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping.

The LORD has heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.

Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed let them return and be ashamed suddenly.

 (KJV)

Psalms Five - Psalms for the Soul

psalmsforthesoul.blogspot.com Give ear to my words O LORD consider my meditation.  Hearken to the voice of my cry my King and my God for to you will I pray. My voice shall you hear in the morning O LORD in the morning will I direct my prayer to you and will look up.  For you are not a God that have pleasure in wickedness neither shall evil dwell with you.  The foolish shall not stand in your sight you hate all workers of iniquity. You shall destroy them that speak leasing the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.

But as for me, I will come into your house in the multitude of your mercy and in your fear will I worship toward your holy temple. Lead me O LORD in your righteousness because of mine enemies make your way straight before my face.

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth their inward part is very wickedness their throat is an open sepulchre they flatter with their tongue.  Destroy  them O God let them fall by their own counsels cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against you.

But let all those that put their trust in you rejoice let them ever shout for joy because you defend them let them also that love your name be joyful in you.  For you LORD, will bless the righteous with favor will you compass him as with a shield.

 (KJV)
