Psalm 6| Prayer in Time of Distress

<<To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David.>> O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long? Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.

For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks? I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears. Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.

Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer. Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly. (Psalms 6:1-10 KJV)

Psalm forty-Two- Longing for God

The palmist, perhaps a Levite, longs for the day when he can again come to the Temple of God.  He seems to be far away from Jerusalem, and in his memory relives the joyous pilgrimages he used to make in the past.

To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.  (KJV)

Psalms Twenty-Two | Psalms for the Soul

To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar
 A Psalm of David

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, and from the
words of my roaring? O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you hear not; and in the night season, and am not silent.  But thou art holy, O You that inhabit the praises of Israel. Our fathers trusted in you: they trusted, and you did deliver them.

They cried unto you, and were delivered: they trusted in you, and were not confounded.  But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.  All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,  He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

But you are he that took me out of the womb: you did make me hope when I was upon my mother's breasts.  I was cast upon you from the womb: you are my God from my mother's belly.  Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.  They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleave to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.  I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.  They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.  Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.

For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.  My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.  All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before you.

For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.  A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

 (KJV)

Psalms Sixteen- God Preserves | Psalms for the Soul

Michtam of David.
A Poem

Preserve me, O God: for in you do I put my trust.  O my soul, you have said to the LORD, You are my Lord: my goodness extend not to you  But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.  The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: you maintain my lot.

The lines are fallen to me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.  I will bless the LORD, who has given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.  I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoice my flesh also shall rest in hope.  For you will not leave my soul in hell; neither will you suffer (allow) your Holy One to see corruption.

Psalms 16:11
You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

 (KJV)

Psalms Thirteen - Psalms for the Soul

psalmsforthesoul.blogspot.com
How long will you forget me, O LORD? Forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?

How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?

 Consider and hear me, O LORD my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death;

Lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him; and those that trouble me rejoice when I am moved.

But I have trusted in your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

I will sing unto the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me.

 (KJV)
